The Gateshead Millennium Bridge, a work of art in itself, arches across the Tyne to link the City to Gateshead Quays and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. The Angel of the North (at the gateway to Gateshead and Newcastle) is probably the finest piece of sculpture produced in the UK for generations. The City has also gained a reputation in the athletics world due to the close association of the City with ex Olympic Stars Steve Cram and Brendan Foster, this association leading to the Great North Run, one of the premier races on the UK circuit, and the Gateshead Athletics Centre hosting International standard athletics meetings. The surrounding area of Northumbria boasts wild areas of the North Pennines, dramatic coastline and the extensive Northumberland National Park. Much of Britain's history was moulded in the region. Hadrian's Wall, a World Heritage Site was the northern boundary of the Roman Empire, and the wall and its associated Roman areas can be explored at many sites including Vindolanda, Corbridge, Arbeia Fort in South Shields. You can also explore Newcastle's past from Romans to the present day at the Discovery Museum. And the nurture of Britain's early Christian heritage in the area is represented by Lindisfarne Priory on Holy Island, the majestic Durham Cathedral and Bede's World at Jarrow. All in all you will need several short breaks or weekends to discover the delights of Newcastle and Northumbria.
