The museum has been closed since Oct 2002 and is undergoing a one million pound refurbishment. The museum will re-open in spring 2004. The plans for the museum include; the transformation of the Catherine Cookson Gallery, a brand new art adventure centre with hands on displays which will enable visitors to find out more about the paintings and the artists. There will be a new larger exhibition area and a new lift and toilets are also planned to make the museum more accessible.
